I received the following email about Bostic. I believe he used a
Martin alto. Anyone know what brand of mouthpiece he used? Thanks.

"I have not been able to find any postings as to what set up Earl
Bostic used. Most people that hear his music and don't know him assume
he played tenor because he got such a big fat sound out of his alto.

I am particularly interested in his mouthpiece- would that have been a
Link? His set up doesn't appear on any of the sax player lists I have
tracked down on the Internet. Any light you could shed on this would
be greatly appreciated!"

### check out Earl Bostic on MySpace..... A commentary by Marty
Jourard includes info that Bostic played a Martin Committee with a
Beechler MP also says Bostic used a tenor reed on his
mouthpiece....definately one of the most underrated sax players. Hope
this helps

Somewhere I've seen a picture of him playing tenor, and on it there is a
white mouthpiece.

That's interesting about the tenor reed, I didn't know that.

I remember reading something saying that Earl Bostic was supposed to
have had a bit of razor blade inside his mouthpiece, acting as a sort
of primitive spoiler, like Runyon's http://www.runyonproducts.com/spoiler.html

Whether that is true, or just someone's fanciful imaginings, I don't
know.

Was Earl Bostic the model for the commercial-leaning saxophonist in
the film "Bird" that Charlie Parker showed disdain for ?

This is a link I found to a third hand rumour of it being Earl
Bostic. Well actually more of a question.

Who knows the truth ?
says nothing about a bird/bostic spat there . . ?

is the event in the film based on a true story?
I've read Ross Russells "bird lives" but don't recall that story - that said
it's a while since i did read it and of course the book is far from
definitive.
So maybe it was merely Clint Eastwoods take on Birds disdain for rock'n'roll
etc ?
